          Winterhalter was born on April 20, 1805, in the small village of Menzenschwand (now part of St.

          Blasien) in the Black Forest region of Baden, Germany. He was the sixth child of Fidel Winterhalter, a farmer and resin producer, and his wife Eva Mayer. Winterhalter's peasant background had a significant influence on his life.
